Are Cardinals Ready for Big Free Agent Splash?
Sunday, November 22nd, 1998: Speculation has it that St. Louis and Aaron Sele are trying to flesh out a contract agreement that would bring the 28-year-old starting pitcher into the fold.

Sele is reportedly going to pocket $10,235,000 over 3 years if things pan out.

Sunday, November 22nd, 1998: Today, players who are eligible can file for free agency in Major League Baseball. Teams have the entire offseason to negotiate contracts with the players and sign them.

This year's top free agents, courtesy of BNN, are:

2. Andy Pettitte, 26 year-old starting pitcher
3. Hideki Matsui, 24 year-old right fielder
4. Carlos Perez, 27 year-old starting pitcher

6. Jose Lima, 26 year-old starting pitcher
7. Scott Bankhead, 35 year-old starting pitcher
8. Kazuhisa Ishii, 25 year-old starting pitcher
9. Juan Guzman, 26 year-old starting pitcher
10. Tony Clark, 26 year-old first baseman
Braves, Yankees Confirm Trade
Thursday, November 19th, 1998: It has been in the rumor mill for several weeks, but today team officials for Atlanta and New York confirmed an agreement. The Braves dealt 27-year-old left fielder Raul Mondesi and 23-year-old minor league first baseman Bucky Jacobsen to the Yankees for 37-year-old first baseman Andres Galarraga and 23-year-old minor league reliever Ben Ford.

Mondesi has a career .276 average with 282 hits, 46 doubles, 7 triples, 26 home runs, 143 RBIs, and 137 runs scored to date.

In his 1974-game career Galarraga has hit .268 with 2038 hits, 349 home runs, and 1225 RBIs and has scored 1102 runs.
